AI Drafting

Last updated: March 5, 2026

UpdatePilot uses AI to turn your raw metrics and bullet points into a polished investor update.

How It Works

  1. You enter metrics, highlights, lowlights, and asks in the wizard.
  2. Click Generate Draft — the AI combines your inputs with your company's tone setting and historical context to produce a complete update.
  3. The draft appears in the editor, split into sections: Key Metrics, Highlights, Challenges, and Asks.

Tone Settings

Set your preferred writing tone in Settings > General. Choose from three presets:

  • Founder-direct — Candid and personal, like an email from the CEO. First-person, conversational, no corporate jargon.
  • Data-forward — Metrics-heavy and analytical. Leads with numbers and trends, concise commentary.
  • Storyteller — Narrative-driven with context and color. Weaves metrics into a compelling story.

You can also write a custom tone description. The AI follows this guidance for every draft.

Section Locking

After generating a draft, each section has a lock icon:

  • Locked sections are preserved when you regenerate. Use this to protect sections you've already edited.
  • Unlocked sections will be rewritten on the next generation.

This lets you iteratively refine your update — lock the sections you're happy with and regenerate the rest.

Per-Section Regeneration

Click the sparkle icon on any individual section to regenerate just that section. You can optionally add guidance (e.g., "Focus on our growth story" or "Make this more concise") in the guidance modal that appears.

Editing

The editor supports Markdown. Each section is a separate text area, so you can edit freely without affecting other sections. Click Save Changes to persist your edits.

Previews

Use the tab bar to switch between:

  • Editor — Edit the Markdown source.
  • Web Preview — See how the update will look on the web.
  • Email Preview — See how the update will appear in recipients' inboxes.

Token Usage

AI drafting uses tokens from your monthly allowance. Your current usage is displayed in the editor toolbar and in the user menu. Free plans have a limited token budget; Pro plans have a higher limit. If you hit your limit, you can still write and edit updates manually.

Tips

  • Enter detailed bullets — the more context you give the AI, the better the draft.
  • Use the guidance field to steer regeneration ("Be more specific about revenue growth").
  • Lock sections early so you don't lose good edits when regenerating.
  • Preview your update in both web and email views before sending.
