UpdatePilot's update wizard walks you through building a complete investor update step by step.
The Update Wizard
The wizard has four steps:
- Metrics — Your key numbers
- Narrative — Highlights, lowlights, and asks
- Review — AI-generated draft and editing
- Send — Select recipients and deliver
Step 1: Metrics
Add each metric with:
- Name — A short identifier (e.g., "MRR", "Burn Rate").
- Display name (optional) — A longer label for the update itself (e.g., "Monthly Recurring Revenue").
- Value — The current number.
- Unit — Dollar, percent, months, users, or a custom unit.
- Display type — Number, bar chart, or line chart for how it appears in the update.
- Note (optional) — Context for your investors ("Up 20% after launching enterprise tier").
If you've sent a previous update, UpdatePilot automatically calculates month-over-month changes and includes them in the draft.
Step 2: Narrative
Enter bullets for each section:
- Highlights — What went well. Product milestones, revenue growth, key hires.
- Lowlights / Challenges — What didn't go as planned. Churn, delays, market headwinds.
- Asks — What you need from investors. Introductions, advice, hiring leads.
Keep each bullet concise — the AI will expand them into polished prose.
Step 3: Review & Edit
After entering your inputs, click Generate Draft to create an AI-written update. See AI Drafting for details on editing, section locking, and tone control.
Step 4: Send
Select which contacts receive the update and send. See Sending & Tracking for domain setup and tracking details.
Tough Month Mode
Having a rough month? Click Tough Month from the dashboard to send a shorter update with just your metrics. It keeps your streak alive without the pressure of writing a full narrative. The AI will write a brief, honest summary focused on the numbers.
